Spacecraft Power Systems Engineer

Engineer solar generation, battery storage, power conditioning, distribution and fault protection for every mission phase.

Role mandate

Build the capability for the era ahead.

This team member will combine subject-matter depth, sound judgment and disciplined execution to move the mission from architecture to measurable results.

Responsibilities

  • Own the Electrical Power workstream for Spacecraft Power Systems Engineer and deliver measurable technical or operating outcomes.
  • Own requirements, interfaces, performance budgets and verification for flight and ground systems.
  • Coordinate hardware, software, payload, bus, network and mission-operation dependencies.
  • Drive design reviews, risk retirement, integration and readiness through the mission lifecycle.

Required qualifications

  • Engineering experience with spacecraft, payloads, RF systems, avionics, antennas or ground systems.
  • Working knowledge of requirements management, interface control and verification.
  • Ability to perform disciplined analysis and communicate technical risk.

Preferred experience

  • Experience taking flight hardware or mission systems through qualification and operations.
  • Familiarity with constellation, optical-link or quantum-communications programs.

Scientific and technical requirements

Physics, mathematics and engineering foundations

  • Circuit theory, semiconductor devices, power electronics, control systems, electrochemistry, radiation effects and reliability.
  • Energy balance, solar-array geometry, battery state estimation, conversion efficiency, fault protection and grounding/bonding.

Mathematics and working equations

  • Energy balance ΔE = ∫(Pgeneration − Pload/ηconversion)dt across sunlight, eclipse, maneuver and safe-mode cases.
  • Solar-array output P ≈ G A η cosθ with degradation, temperature, radiation and wiring losses included.
  • Battery state of charge SOC(t) = SOC0 − (1/Cnom)∫Ibatt dt, corrected for efficiency, temperature and aging.
  • Ohm/Kirchhoff laws, P = VI and converter ripple/transient models govern distribution, harness loss and protection coordination.

Hardware, flight and infrastructure components

  • Solar cells and panels, deployment wiring, MPPT/solar-array regulator, battery cells/BMS, PCDU, DC-DC converters, switches, fuses and current limiters.
  • Harnesses, connectors, grounding network, EMI filters, telemetry sensors and radiation-tolerant power semiconductors.

Software, laboratory and analysis tools

  • SPICE, MATLAB/Simulink, power-budget spreadsheets, schematic/PCB tools, harness CAD and parts/derating databases.
  • Solar-array simulator, electronic loads, power analyzer, oscilloscope, DMM, hipot/insulation and EMC test equipment.

Verification and mission skills

  • Test startup, eclipse recovery, load steps, inrush, faults, latch-up protection, battery abuse limits, EMI/EMC and worst-case end-of-life power margin.

Authoritative technical references

The hiring sequence will follow operating milestones and project requirements. The position may begin through advisory, consulting or project-based work before moving into a full-time role.
